Two thousand years ago the people of the ancient Egyptian cities, Mendes and Thmuis, prayed to the gods that the river, which was their source of life, would not abandon them. Their prayers fell, however, on deaf ears, and the cities were swallowed by the alluvial plain. Archaeologists have now returned to the Nile Delta to unearth the silted-in harbors and ancient ruins of these two cities.
